Second-year students pursuing Bachelor of Cosmetology and Beauty Science program at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) organized a ‘Harmony in Hand’ Massage Seminar, an interactive seminar focused on the therapeutic benefits of hand massage, equipping students with practical skills essential for the growing beauty and wellness industry. The event held on 3rd April 2025, at the University’s Main Catering Unit (MCU), highlighted the therapeutic benefits of hand massage and the role of massage in relaxation, stress relief, and circulation improvement.
This seminar is part of the Research Therapy and Body Care unit taught by Dr. Issah Kweyu. It provided the second year students with an in-depth exploration of the principles, techniques, and professional standards of massage therapy.
Speaking at the event, the Dean, School of Natural Sciences- Dr. Joseph Owino commended the students for their initiative, underscoring the growing importance of holistic wellness practices in the beauty industry. “Hand massage is not only a beauty therapy technique but also a wellness solution that improves clients’ health and relaxation,” said Dr. Owino.

Commenting on the importance of the seminar, Dr. Kweyu emphasized the role of research in advancing beauty and wellness practices adding that massage therapy is key in improving physical and mental well-being. “Hand massage enhances blood circulation, relieves stress, and supports overall health,” reiterated Dr. Kweyu.

The Keynote Speaker, Ms. Judith Adhiambo emphasized the importance of practical exposure in cosmetology training. “Massage therapy is more than just a beauty treatment, it requires both the mastery of science and art. By equipping our students with the right knowledge and techniques, we are preparing them for excellence in the wellness industry,” she stated.

The event also featured presentations from the students on various topics including History of Massage Therapy, Features of a Massage Room, Therapeutic Benefits of Massage, Contradictions of Massage, as well as Massage Etiquette and Hygiene. The comprehensively discussed different massage techniques, pressure points, and best customer service approaches. The other notable personalities who took part in the seminar included Dr. Seline Ooko, Dr. Jackson Cheruiyot and Ms. Lydia Temko.

One of the students, Ms. Monicah Nyakundi (Assistant Class Representative) shared their excitement about the event’s success. “This seminar has given us a deeper understanding of how hand massage contributes to overall well-being. It has also enhanced our ability to provide quality services as future beauty professionals,” she said.
Undoubtedly, the beauty and wellness industry is rapidly expanding, and such initiatives help students develop market-ready skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in Spa therapy, beauty consulting, and holistic wellness.
